  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (cold)
  • ¾ cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream (cold)
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 tbsp heavy whipping cream (for glaze)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1 tsp instant espresso powder (for glaze)
  • 1 tbsp brewed coffee (or espresso) (for glaze)
  • 12 tbsp milk or cream (or water) (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, espresso powder, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  2. Cut cold butter into the dry mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in mini chocolate chips.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix vanilla extract with cold whipping cream. Gradually add to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and shape into an 8-inch circle; cut into triangles.
  5. Chill on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 30 minutes. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Prepare the glaze by mixing powdered sugar, espresso powder, brewed coffee, and cream until smooth; drizzle over cooled scones.
