Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh herbs (thyme, parsley, or rosemary)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add eggs, softened butter, flour, and salt to the yeast mixture. Knead until smooth and elastic (5-7 minutes). Cover and let rise in a warm place for about an hour.
  3. While dough rises, sauté minced garlic in melted butter over low heat for about two minutes; stir in fresh herbs.
  4. Roll out the dough into a rectangle on a floured surface. Brush with garlic herb mixture and sprinkle mozzarella evenly.
  5. Roll into a log shape, slice lengthwise, and twist both halves together. Place in a greased pan for the second rise (30–40 minutes).
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush loaf with egg wash made from one egg whisked with water; bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Allow cooling for about 15 minutes before slicing.
