  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 tbsp vanilla bean paste
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 tbsp Earl Grey tea, finely ground for soaking purposes
  • 1/2 tbsp culinary lavender, crushed lightly
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste
  • 1 tbsp culinary lavender, finely ground
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 oz cream cheese, cold
  • 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste
  • Purple food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Brew 3 tbsp Earl Grey tea with 1 tbsp culinary lavender in 1 cup boiling water; let steep for 10 minutes and strain.
  3. Cream together 10 tbsp softened unsalted butter with 1½ cups granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, followed by 1 tbsp vanilla bean paste.
  5. In another bowl, whisk together 2¼ cups all-purpose flour, 1½ tsp baking powder, ¼ tsp baking soda, and ½ tsp salt.
  6. Alternate adding dry ingredients with 1 cup buttermilk and the infused tea mixture until just combined.
  7. Divide batter between prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Allow cakes to cool before frosting with lavender vanilla bean cream cheese frosting.
